Bingo Wagering Debate Has Sheriff Caught in The Middle
The state of Alabama is similar to other states in that there is people on both sides of a debate involving gambling. The debate in this state, however, is not over slot machines. It is over the game of Bingo.

Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes is in the middle of an intense controversy surrounding the game of Bingo. On one side, people are lining up in protest of a game that involves gambling, even if it is for charitable causes.

The other side are people who are not so worried about the negative affects of gambling, only the positive. Positives like the creation of jobs and money raised for causes that need financial help.

It will be Hughes' job to be the referee in this battle. "My position is, I don't have a vote in this thing. I don't make or interpret the laws. I enforce. I don't have an opinion one way or another. I am sworn to provide law enforcement for those who support this issue, and I am sworn to provide law enforcement for those who oppose this issue," said Hughes.

Actually, it will soon also be his responsibility to give the permits to developers looking to bring video bingo into the County. He and his staff will also be responsible for making sure all of the guidelines are followed. Guidelines such as age limit and hours of operation for these bingo halls.

Developer Ronnie Gilley is currently seeking a site for a bingo hall. Once the site is found, construction will begin. After seventy percent of phase one of the project is complete, bingo will be allowed.
